Special Feature: Primary Care Issues for the Nephrologists Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Guide for Nephrologists
نویسنده
چکیده
Cardiovascular disease is a major source of morbidity and mortality for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a strong predictor of coronary artery disease and a risk factor for mortality in the general population. This is of particular interest to nephrologists because the risk for PAD is increased in CKD. Often, PAD is overlooked as a source of morbidity and as a cardiovascular risk factor in this population. This review serves as an overview of the epidemiology, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of PAD with an emphasis on CKD. Clin J Am Soc Nephrol 2: 839–846, 2007. doi: 10.2215/CJN.04101206

A Survey of Canadian Nephrologists Assessing Prognostication in End-Stage Renal Disease
BACKGROUND Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) frequently have a relatively poor prognosis with complex care needs that depend on prognosis. While many means of assessing prognosis are available, little is known about how Canadian nephrologists predict prognosis, whether they routinely share prognostic information with their patients, and how this information guides management. OBJEC...

PROBLEM ADDRESSED Primary care providers (PCPs) are ideally situated to detect and manage patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but they could use more support from nephrologists to accomplish this. OBJECTIVE OF PROGRAM To improve early detection and management of CKD in primary care, and improve referrals to nephrologists through education and greater partnership between nephrologists ...
متن کاملCriteria for referring patients with renal disease for nephrology consultation: a review of the literature.
INTRODUCTION Referrals to nephrologists comprise not only patients with chronic kidney disease but also those with other nephrological conditions. There may be confusion about when to refer a patient to a nephrologist. We conducted a literature review to identify preexisting priority-setting, triage or referral criteria developed to guide referrals from primary care to a nephrologist. METHODS...

متن کاملAttitudes of Canadian nephrologists, family physicians and patients with kidney failure toward primary care delivery for chronic dialysis patients.
BACKGROUND Nephrologists have traditionally assumed responsibility for both nephrological and primary care health problems of their dialysis patients. However, given the increasing limitations of nephrology human resources, there is concern that traditional models may fall short of providing comprehensive care. METHODS We studied this issue by distributing three different self-administered su...
